This page is shorter than the others because less is published. It is honest about that rather than filling the gap.
What could not be established
Searches for a UAE national prion disease registry, a surveillance centre, a designated reference laboratory and a published UAE case series did not find them. No UAE organisation appears in the CJD International Support Alliance directory of national family associations.
Absence from these sources does not prove absence in the country. It does mean that a family here will usually be working with a hospital team rather than with a national prion service, and that is worth knowing at the start.
What to ask the treating team
Three questions move things forward.
Can a spinal fluid sample be sent to a reference laboratory in another country for RT-QuIC testing, and what would that cost and take? Several national centres accept samples from abroad, with a fee.
Is a clinical genetics service involved, and can genetic counselling be arranged before any decision about PRNP testing for relatives?
Who is coordinating care, and can palliative care be involved now rather than later? The 2026 international recommendations for CJD care advise involving palliative care early, and that advice does not depend on which country you are in.
Support from outside the country
Family organisations in other countries generally talk to families anywhere, in English, and the CJD International Support Alliance directory lists them by country. Support groups by country collects the contact routes, including the United States helpline and the UK helpline.
What applies anywhere
The parts of this site that do not depend on your country may be the most useful here: what to expect, tests explained, questions for your doctor, daily care at home and counselling first.
If you know of a UAE service, clinic or group that should be listed here, corrections explains how to tell us.
