Edgar Chan

A consultant clinical neuropsychologist in London whose main body of work is Queen Square clinical neuropsychology, in particular frontal lobe cognition, cognitive screening tools and stroke, and who appears on prion disease papers under a National Prion Clinic affiliation from 2025 onwards. He holds the 2023 CJD Support Network research grant for an evaluation of single-session Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for people living at risk of prion disease, and is the corresponding author, a workshop facilitator and one of two funding acquisition leads on the resulting feasibility paper published in Neurotherapeutics in 2026.

Key facts

  • On the 2026 Neurotherapeutics ACT paper he is listed with three affiliations: the National Prion Clinic at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Department of Neuropsychology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UCLH), and the Department of Translational Neuroscience and Stroke at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.
  • He is the corresponding author of that paper, which is given with an NHS email address rather than a university one, consistent with an NHS clinical post held alongside a UCL departmental affiliation.
  • The CJD Support Network lists a 2023 research grant to Dr Edgar Chan titled "Evaluation of single-session ACT to support those living at-risk of Prion disease"; no amount is published for it.
  • In the published study he was one of two facilitators of the single 5-hour group workshop, working with a trainee clinical psychologist.
  • His contributor roles on the paper span conceptualisation, methodology, analysis, investigation, data curation, drafting, review, supervision and funding acquisition, which is the pattern of a senior supervising author rather than a first author.
  • The paper's only declared competing interest is that he reports financial support provided by the CJD Support Network; no grant number is given.
  • He is one of 35 authors of the multidisciplinary recommendations for palliative and supportive care in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and related disorders, published open access in Age and Ageing in July 2026, where he is listed under the Department of Neuropsychology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
  • He is a co-author of the March 2025 Journal of Neurology report describing a novel PRNP E146G inherited prion disease kindred with distinctive clinical, pathological and fluid biomarker features, listed there under the National Prion Clinic at UCLH, Queen Square.
  • He is first author of the 2026 Journal of Neurology paper presenting normative data and validation for the Queen Square Cognitive Assessment Screen (Q-CAS), a brief six-domain cognitive and mood screen tested in 648 healthy adults and 150 patients with acute stroke, with Lisa Cipolotti as senior author; his affiliations there are the Department of Neuropsychology at NHNN and the UCL Stroke Research Centre within the Department of Translational Neuroscience and Stroke.
  • A Europe PMC author search restricted to a Neuropsychology affiliation returns 38 records under his name, running from 2015 to 2026 and dominated by Queen Square studies of frontal lobe function, executive and fluency testing, cognitive screening after stroke, superficial siderosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Fabry disease.
  • Prion disease is a recent and still small part of that record: a Europe PMC search for his name with prion terms returns only the ACT paper, its medRxiv preprint, the Age and Ageing recommendations and the PRNP E146G report.
  • Caution on identity: the same search also returns a 2010 Gut paper on a brain-to-gut route of prion transmission with a "Chan E" among Australian authors from a different group. There is no evidence linking that author to the London clinician and the two should not be merged.
  • The UCL National Prion Clinic clinic staff page is reported in search results to list him as Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, which matches his paper affiliations, but that page returns an HTTP 403 to direct fetch so this remains a search excerpt rather than a confirmed read; an older archived version of the clinic staff page instead named a different clinic neuropsychologist, so the current roster is unconfirmed.
  • No public UCL Profiles (Iris) entry and no UCLH find-a-consultant profile could be found for him. Whether either exists is unknown, and no job title has been taken from an employer page.
