Nir Giladi

Nir Giladi was a professor of neurology at Tel Aviv University and a senior leader at Tel Aviv Sourasky (Ichilov) Medical Center, where he chaired the Neurological Institute from 2007 to 2022, then directed the Brain Division or Brain Institute, and directed the Aufzien Center for Prevention and Treatment of Parkinson Disease. His main field was movement disorders, especially Parkinson disease, gait and genetics.

Key facts

  • Tel Aviv University announced on 2024-12-11 the passing of Prof. Nir Giladi, director of the Aufzien Center, and the center now names Anat Mirelman as director.
  • He was a full professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Tel Aviv University, a member and board member of the Sagol School of Neuroscience and holder of the Sieratzki Chair in Neurology.
  • He chaired the Neurological Institute at Tel Aviv Medical Center from 2007 to 2022 and then directed its Brain Division, also serving as Associate Dean.
  • His main field was movement disorders, especially Parkinson disease, gait and freezing of gait and Parkinson genetics, with MJFF funded LRRK2 projects from 2011 to 2023 and a role in the MJFF LRRK2 Cohort Consortium.
  • He was 13th of 14 authors on the April 2023 BMC Neurology protocol of the Tel Aviv natural history study of preclinical genetic CJD, and the authors contributions say he took part in designing the protocol and writing the manuscript.
  • He was 16th of 17 authors on the March 2025 JNNP paper on white matter abnormalities in healthy E200K carriers; the first author is Nurit Omer and the last author is Noa Bregman, so the existing description of him as senior author is not accurate.
  • The JNNP paper used diffusion tensor imaging and stratified carriers by CSF total tau above 290 pg/mL, which connects his work to MRI and CSF tau markers.
  • The registry record for the study (NCT05746715) lists Noa Bregman as principal investigator and Eli Sprecher as head of R and D; he is not listed as an official, so he did not formally lead the study.
  • The E200K study is funded by a centre grant from Ionis Pharmaceuticals, which had no role in design or publication, and the JNNP paper lists Ionis as its grant.
  • Only two prion disease papers with him as author are indexed (the 2023 protocol and the 2025 JNNP paper); his other recent indexed papers, including a March 2026 J Parkinsons Dis alpha-synuclein seed amplification study, are Parkinson disease work.
  • The public institutional routes for this work are the Cognitive Neurology Unit at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center through the registry record, and the Aufzien Center pages at Tel Aviv University.
