Key facts
- Listed in 2024 with the affiliation National Registry of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and related disorders, ISS, Rome, and in 2025 and 2026 papers with the Department of Neuroscience, ISS, Rome.
- The ISS National CJD Registry, founded in 1993 and located in the ISS Department of Neuroscience, carries out national surveillance of incidence and mortality and also does prion research; the public page names no individual staff.
- Coauthored the Nature Reviews Disease Primers overview of CJD and other prion diseases (2024-02-29) with Inga Zerr, Simon Mead, Peter Hermann, Gianluigi Forloni and Brian Appleby.
- Last author of a 2026 J Neurol registry-based cohort of 599 sporadic CJD cases that found faster progression and higher mortality risk in men than in women.
- Coauthor of a 2026 Parkinsonism Relat Disord study of 181 Italian CJD Registry patients with rapidly progressive dementia and parkinsonism, written with the Bologna group (Parchi, Baiardi, Capellari), showing that clinical signs alone separate prion disease from Lewy body disease poorly and that MRI and EEG help.
- Coauthor of international genetics work on sporadic CJD: a PLoS One 2024 GWAS of disease duration and age at onset, and a Brain 2025 multiomic study (medRxiv preprint July 2024) that prioritised 32 candidate genes such as STX6 and PDIA4.
- Works on seed amplification diagnostics: coauthor of the 2022 RT-QuIC diagnostic review, a 2024 scoping review of RT-QuIC and PMCA in accessible specimens such as skin and olfactory mucosa, and a 2025 case report of a novel PRNP A118V variant where a second-generation RT-QuIC was positive after a first negative test.
- Earlier coauthor of the EUROCJD analysis of genetic prion disease across European surveillance systems.
- The Italian registry publishes suspected case and death tables, most recently with data to 2026-08-31, and its public pages list RT-QuIC, CSF 14-3-3 and MRI as diagnostic support and PRNP testing for genetic forms.
